The University of California just announced they will officially drop SAT and ACT scores from its admissions and scholarship process. Activists have been arguing for years that standardized tests put minority and low-income students at a disadvantage without tutors or taking expensive prep courses. The UC Board of Regents voted last year to eliminate the SAT and ACT testing requirement for incoming freshman students, but now it's actually happening. While, the SAT and ACT tests can be used when considering a student for admissions in the fall of 2022, the test will be optional. The UC system hopes to have another test in place for the freshman students enrolling in the fall of 2025.
