While parents are always encouraged to check their kids’ Halloween treats to make sure they’re safe to eat, this year police in Pennsylvania are urging them to be on the lookout for something extra scary: drug-laced edibles. The Johnstown Police Department has issued a warning on Facebook after authorities found “Nerds Rope edibles containing 400mg THC” while fulfilling a search warrant.
"During this Halloween, we urge parents to be ever vigilant in checking their children's candy before allowing them to consume those treats," the department’s post explains. "Drug laced edibles are packaged like regular candy and may be hard to distinguish from the real candy."
Photos of the edibles show them labeled as “Nerds Rope” with warning labels reading “for medical use only” and “keep out of reach of children and animals.” The company that makes Nerds candy, Ferrara Candy Company, says this is a counterfeit product and is no way associated with them. The FDA has issued a list ofHalloween food safety tipsto protect kids and warns parents not to let their trick-or-treaters dig into their candy until an adult carefully inspects it.
