What Your Active Wear / Work Out Clothes Says About You

Forget Myers-Briggs, if you want to figure out your personality type, it could be as simple as paying attention to what you wear to Pilates class. According to fashion psychologist Anabel Maldonado, our workout clothing choices can reveal a lot about our personality type. She says, “Our personality traits correlate with lots of our lifestyle choices—what type of person we're likely to marry, our political affiliation, and our favorite kind of music—and what we wear to work out is no different.”

Here’s what your go-to active wear look says about you:

  • Head-to-toe black- If you go for an all over black outfit, fashion psychologist Dawnn Karensays you “really want to focus on working out, not so much on what you’re going to wear.” Maldonado adds that putting on all black can feel like putting on armor to protect you for your workout.
  • Bold- Those that opt for bright and bold, like peacock print leggings, may be self-assured and confident. Bold colors and patterns put you on display, so it’s a look for folks with high self-esteem.
  • New trends- If you like to try out every new trend, you may be open-minded and crave novelty.
  • Old t-shirt- Some people like to throw on any old tee to sweat it out and that could show they’re laid back. They exercise because they enjoy it and don’t really care about what others in class think.
  • Matching sets- If you’re into coordinated active wear sets, you might be highly competitive and neurotic, Maldonado says. You may feel the need to be the best dressed one in class and you’re willing to overspend on activewear to do it.
