After the United States women’s soccer team claimed its fourth Women’s World Cup title on Sunday,Jessica McDonald celebrated with her teammates first and then with someone very special: her son. She’s the only mom out of the 23 athletes on the team and her seven-year-old son,Jeremiah, was with her in France to see his mom’s victory.
McDonald shared a photo on Instagram showing Jeremiah sprinkling her with confetti after the big win, captioning the post, “We did it, bud!!! US #WorldChamps.” She’s been raising her son while competing at such a high level, which is something her teammates are in awe of. Player Crystal Dunn says she hopes more women follow in McDonald’s footsteps in the future and won’t feel like they have to choose between having a family or having a career and can do both.
“He doesn’t fully understand, but at least he’s an age right now where he’s actually going to remember this,” McDonald explains. “He’s going to look back and be like, ‘Wow, I was there. Wow, my mom is actually cool – like she said.’”
