A Las Vegas crossing guard is being hailed as a hero for stepping in front of a speeding car to protect a mother and her two children in a school crosswalk. When crossing guard Richard Jones saw the vehicle approaching, he positioned himself between it and the family before it stopped less than 10 feet away.
The mother says Jones shielded them and believes something terrible could have happened if he hadn’t acted. Jones believes the car was traveling about 35 miles per hour through the 15-mile-per-hour school zone, but says he was just doing his job.
The family later surprised Jones with a gift basket filled with restaurant gift cards, a neck fan and a handwritten thank-you note. The mother says her children still thank him every day for keeping them safe.
