On Monday, a 76-year-old man was found alive after going missing for four days during a solo camping trip in the desert north of Phoenix. Mark Young, a Vietnam veteran, had been reported missing after failing to return for a planned dinner, prompting a search led by the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, which located his vehicle but not him.
On the third day of the search effort, family members and search teams heard a faint voice and split up to locate the source of the calls. It was Young’s own children who ultimately found him and reunited with him after days of searching. Authorities say he became disoriented after nightfall and survived by staying in shaded areas during the day and seeking shelter from wind at night. He had no food or water during that time and was unable to start a fire.
Young was airlifted to a nearby hospital with dehydration and minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery. His family, including his seven children and 30 grandchildren, had been searching for him throughout the ordeal.
