Madonna is reflecting on the "serious" infection that landed her in the hospital two years ago.
During her first ever podcast interview, speaking to host Jay Shetty on the Monday (September 29) episode of the On Purpose podcast, the Queen of Pop shared more details on the 2023 health scare that landed her unconscious in the hospital for several days. She previously explained how she was placed in an induced coma for 48 hours, but she shed more light into the experience during the new interview, per People.
"I was rehearsing for my tour, and I got a bacterial infection," she said. "One minute I was alive and dancing around and the next minute I was in the ICU unit of a hospital and I woke up from being unconscious for four days.
The "Vogue" singer revealed that she battled and overcame sepsis, a serious condition where the body "responds improperly to an infection" and can lead to septic shock, which can be deadly, according to the Mayo Clinic. Even when she was finally released from the hospital, she had a long recovery to regain her strength, a difficult experience for someone who "always saw myself as a superwoman."
During her recovery, she leaned on her spirituality and messages from her Kabbalah teacher.
"I used to talk to my teacher all the time and he was like, 'The sooner you accept what's happening to you and that you don't know when it's going to end, the sooner it's going to end,'" she said. "That made so much sense to me. And of course it did."
Throughout the interview, Madonna opened up about the importance of spirituality, and explained how her "spiritual life" has helped to keep her "sane" for decades.
