A California man told federal investigators he killed both of his children because he believed they were infected with "serpent DNA" and would "grow into monsters." Prosecutors said that Matthew Taylor Coleman, 40, drove his two-year-old son and ten-month-old daughter to Mexico over the weekend.

His wife called the police when she realized he did not bring a car seat for the kids and did not respond to her messages. She filed a missing person report and used the "find my phone" feature to determine that her husband was in Mexico.

When Coleman tried to cross the border and return to the United States, officials could not find his children and found blood in his vehicle. He was taken into custody and admitted to killing both of his children by stabbing them with a spearfishing gun. He said that he knew what he did was wrong but claimed: "it was the only course of action that would save the world."

"M. COLEMAN explained that he was enlightened by QAnon and Illuminati conspiracy theories and was receiving visions and signs revealing that his wife, A.C. possessed serpent DNA and had passed it onto his children. M. COLEMAN said that he was saving the world from monsters," the affidavit said.

Coleman is being held without bond until his next court hearing on August 31.
