A 13-year-old boy was duct-taped to his seat after he tried to kick out a window on the airplane. The boy got into a physical altercation with his mother during an American Airlines flight from Maui to Los Angeles shortly after takeoff.
Video shows passengers helping the flight crew subdue the boy as one of the flight attendants duct-taped him to his seat. The flight was diverted to Honolulu, where the teenager was taken into custody. Nobody was injured in the incident.
Officials did not say what sparked the fight between the boy and his mother.
American Airlines said that the passengers deplaned in Honolulu and were booked on other flights.
"Flight 212 with service from Kahului Airport, Maui (OGG) to Los Angeles (LAX) diverted to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu (HNL) due to a customer-related incident yesterday," American Airlines said in a statement. "After landing at HNL at 3:47 p.m. (local time), customers were re-accommodated on other flights or provided hotel accommodations. Safety and security is our top priority, and we apologize to our customers for any inconvenience this caused."
This is the third recent incident in which passengers had to be restrained using duct tape during a flight. On August 3, a 22-year-old man was duct-taped to his seat after allegedly groping two flight attendants and a female passenger. Last month, a woman had to be subdued after she attacked members of the flight crew and tried to open the door while the flight was in the air.
