Robert F. Kennedy’s Granddaughter & Her Son Missing in Canoe Accident

Robert F. Kennedy's granddaughter, Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, and her 8-year-old son, Gideon, were reported missing on Thursday (April 2) after failing to return from a canoeing trip on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. The Washington Post reports McKean and her son hopped in a canoe from their waterfront property in order to retrieve a ball that was accidentally kicked in to the water on Thursday afternoon. For an unknown reason, the mother and son were unable to paddle back to shore.

Maryland authorities reportedly found an overturned canoe that matched the description of the one McKean and her son departed in. Though helicopters and boat rescue crews have also joined the search, there is no sign of McKean and her son. Maryland's Governor Larry Hogan stated that the search will continue on for McKean and Gideon in a news conference on Friday (April 3).

The Coast Guard shared information on the incident, as well, stating that the mother and son were "seen struggling to return to shore in a canoe" before vanishing. The Coast Guard also added that the weather in the area of the incident on Thursday was extremely windy. There were gusts of wind up to 40 MPH in the Washington D.C. area. By Friday afternoon, the Coast Guard covered 2,275 square miles in their search.

McKean's mother is former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. Her great-uncle is former president John F. Kennedy and her grandfather is late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. The high profile family requested privacy and prayers during this difficult time through a spokesperson.
