Foods We Loved To Hate During The Last Decade

As the 2010s come to a close, we’re looking back at some of the foods and drinks people became obsessed with over the last 10 years. And in hindsight, some of them were not so much binge-worthy as they were cringeworthy. Here are foods people hate to admit they once loved - or just loved to hate in the last decade.

  • Kale everywhere- This leafy green landed on restaurant menus across the country and has found its way into all kinds of recipes, but people drew the line when kale-flavored candy canes came out.
  • Avocado toast- People couldn’t get enough avocado everything in this decade and they were willing to pay a lot for the overpriced brunch favorite.
  • Insane milkshakes- Over-the-top creations topped with everything from an entire slice of cake to a Pop-Tart to a cloud of cotton candy were Instagram-worthy, but challenging to eat.
  • Charcoal- Ink-black burger buns, croissants, and soft serve ice cream had a moment, but thankfully the activated charcoal food trend has died down.
  • Foods made for Instagram- Back in 2016, “The Washington Post” dubbed the rainbow bagel “the most controversial bagel in Brooklyn,” and many brightly colored foods including smoothie bowls and rolled ice cream made for the ‘gram followed.
  • Unicorn-colored everything- It started with the Unicorn Frappuccino at Starbucks and took off from there. Everything from unicorn spring rolls to unicorn ramen made in insanely bright colors were all over social media.
  • Hand salad- Bon Appetit got our attention when it posted a photo of what it called “hand salad,” but it was really just lettuce leaves dipped in dressing and people weren’t having it.
  • Pumpkin spice everything- It’s the flavor of fall and while Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte may be tasty, the trend took over cereal, yogurts, chips, and pasta sauces, and we’re sorry to say, even Pumpkin Spice Spam.
